The Appalachian Trail begins in Maine and rolls into the southern Appalachians of North Georgia, starting a 2,000-mile journey through fourteen states. The trail travels 78.6 miles in Georgia, beginning at the southernmost blaze at Springer Mountain. Springer Mountain is a 2-mile round trip hike. It is short, but challenging walk that ascends to beautiful views at the summit and visits the Appalachian Trail’s final destination commemorating the trail’s southern beginning with a bronze plaque.
Three Forks to Springer Mountain is a favorite day hike in Georgia. It is an 8.6-mile moderately challenging round trip hike crossing through a creek-filled forest, with varying terrain and scenic beauty. In its final stretch, the Appalachian Trail dips through a lush, green, creek-filled valley before climbing to its end at Springer.
